Obama urges Turkey to stop artillery strikes against Kurds

US President Barack Obama has urged Turkey and Kurdish YPG forces to keep calm in northern Syria. In a telephone conversation with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Obama said that YPG forces should not seek to take advantage of the circumstances in the Syria to seize additional territory. He also urged Turkey to show -reciprocal restraint by stopping artillery strikes in the area. According to the office of the Turkish president, Obama assured Turkey of Washington’s support as a NATO ally. Erdogan’s office said the two leaders had agreed to increase cooperation in fight against militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. They also stressed that Russia should stop its alleged provocative actions in Syria. The phone call comes as Turkey is under fire for pounding Kurdish fighters who are battling terrorist groups in Syria.
